New Tool on RabbitEars

In between my schoolwork, I've been spending a lot of time working on a new tool for RabbitEars. A few people have already seen it, but to many others, it will be brand new. Or, very old, depending on how you look at it.

Now located in the Tools menu, or by clicking here, you can now see the RabbitEars TV Query. It is a clone of the FCC's TV Query, but with some more features. Take it for a spin and let me know what you think, both good and bad, as well as what could be improved on it.

And there are definitely more things I'd like to add to it, but I decided I wanted to go ahead and launch it now to get feedback from as many people as possible. So try it out and let me know!

June and July in VHF

Due to my limited time related to summer classes, I've been putting off the typical updates of the VHF Nightmares. That said, it's no major loss, since there have been only four in the last two months. I've brought the page up to date, and here they are:

  • WJLA-7 and WUSA-9 have both filed to make their 52 kW power increases permanent, but with antennas that are now elliptically polarized instead of horizontal.
  • WUOA-6 is licensed for 26 kW and has an STA for 31.5 kW, but has filed for a permanent power increase to 45 kW, the highest power level allowed on low-VHF.
  • KTTC-10 has filed to increase power from 33.7 kW to 43.1 kW.

Nothing too exciting here, but at least now it's up to date once again.

Thesis Prospectus

As many people know, I am a student at UVA, and when the fall semester begins I will be entering my final year. At the University of Virginia, all engineering students are required to complete a fourth year thesis project, which I have now begun. My project will focus on the study of VHF antennas and reception, and yesterday I got my graded prospectus back. I received an A for it, and plan on doing the experimentation some time during the upcoming semester.

So if you are interested, you may read my Thesis Prospectus.

Arizona TV Station Update - June 2010

Another month is in the rear-view mirror, and June 2010 was another busy one. Here is the latest edition of the Arizona TV Station Update, a look at activity during the past month in the state of Arizona and nearby surrounding cities.

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

Menu

I'm sure everyone noticed that I've replaced the huge, tacky menu with a nice neat dropdown menu. Any opinions on the new design?

KBSD and KNOP

I am home for the weekend and in addition to uploading more than a month's worth of backlogged TSReader data captures (bringing my total up to 1,670 unique stations), I'm finally getting a chance to enjoy some e-skip on the TV band.

So far this weekend, I've seen XHRIO-2 and CKPR-2 on analog, with the latter being the first time I've ever received Canada. On digital, I've seen signal on 5 but nothing's decoded. I've successfully decoded KNOP-2 and KBSD-6, and not only did I decode them, I decoded them well enough to grab perfectly clean TSReader data for them! I already had KNOP, but adding KBSD brings me up to 1,671 unique stations.

I'm hoping that things will ease up after my Probability test on Tuesday and I'll have more time for RabbitEars at that point. Until then, enjoy your 4th of July!

Field Day

Hello, all!

Any ham operators participating in Field Day, the UVA radio club is on the air. I had to leave briefly to get a piece of replacement gear for a dead piece, but when I left, we were on 20 meters and we have a 40 meter dipole we'll be moving to later on.

Just listen for W4UVA, that's Whiskey 4 United Victor Alpha, and you'll hear either me or Bert (club VP). =)

Do You Want Fast Cache?

EDIT (10:59PM EDT): Caching is once again active, now that the bug seems to be fixed. Please report any bugs you observe.

EDIT (7:48PM EDT): I've temporarily disabled the caching due to discovery of a HUGE bug.

I love puns.

Anyway, first of all, seeing as how the comments on advertising were largely positive, I'm going to investigate the matter further. I've already sent an e-mail to the person responsible for TSReader and sought his thoughts, though he has yet to get back to me. If he gives the okay, then I'll continue looking into it once time permits it.

As for the actual subject of this post, thanks to the hard work of N2RJ, I am pleased to announce that the market listings are now cached. This means that the page is not regenerated every time someone opens it. This should greatly reduce the load and make the site overall significantly faster. Please comment if you notice a change in site speed.

Next page up for caching is the Statistics page, as it is actually the slowest page on the site.

Advertising Opinions

I've never been a fan of advertising. Yes, it supports many items that we consider free and I appreciate that and do attempt to watch ads while watching programs on TV to support over-the-air broadcasters. Similarly, I dislike begging for donations. I still do donate to causes I like, but I don't like when people and organizations solicit donations.

As such, I'm in a bit of a box. I'm sure it's not just me, but I imagine many people have noticed that RabbitEars seems to get slower and slower as time goes on and I add more features. I have been tossing around the idea of relocating to another provider or upgrading hosting packages on my current provider. However, my current $11/month for which I'm not even responsible for paying is a very good deal to give up. Any change in hosting plan would require me to begin paying a much heftier hosting bill.

EDIT: To clarify, my problem is not a shortage of storage or bandwidth. My problem is that because of the huge numbers of on-the-fly calculations and database calls the website makes, it chews up RAM and processor time. I've not even used 10% of my allotted storage, and I'm using a tiny fraction of my allotted bandwidth (20GB out of 3TB so far this month).

I've considered adding advertising to RabbitEars off and on over the past several months. In fact, the current header design leaves room for advertising to the left and right of the logo. Any advertising I would put on RabbitEars would probably not be through a third party network like Google due to the recent rumors of malware being inserted into third party advertising. That doesn't mean I've ruled it out entirely, but it's highly unlikely that I would go that route.

Instead, I would do my own ad rotations and sell space directly to advertisers. No Flash advertising of any kind, simple text or image ads only. I know I don't want to see obnoxious ads when I visit a website, so I would certainly not put anything like that on RabbitEars.

I, of course, could not make RabbitEars work without the help of you, the public, who views the website and submits updates to me. So I pose the question to contributors, to potential advertisers, and to viewers and readers: What is your opinion? What would you like me to do? Are you willing to tolerate the lower speed of the site in exchange for a corner of the web without ads, or would you prefer a bit of advertising in exchange for a bit of speed? Feel free to leave a comment here or send me an e-mail.

(Please note that unlike other e-mails you send and comments you leave, I may not respond to these as I'm hoping to get a lot of opinions from a lot of people and with school being what it is, I may have to just listen and not respond.)

FCC Publishes Technical Paper on Broadband Plan

Here's a PDF link to the document in question.

It spends a lot of time discussing the various methods of "reclaiming spectrum" and actually dismisses a number of methods the FCC had previously pushed as ways of doing it. The most interesting part to me is a note that WBOC plans to begin running dual HD "in the second quarter." That quarter will be ending in a mere two weeks.
